John Aikin
Dr. John Aikin (1747 - 1822), studied medicine in Edinburgh and practised in Great Yarmoputh. He retired after a stroke in 1792. A friend of Joseph Priestly (a theologian and scientist famous for making chemistry a modern science), Aikin devoted much of his time to writing. His other cartographic work The History of the Environs of London, was published by John Stockdale in 1811.
Aikin first published England Delineated in 1788 witout maps, the second and all subsequent editions except the last conatined 43 simplistic maps probably intended for schoolchildren.
