Biography:
John Bartholomew
John Bartholomew Senior (1805 -1861) founded the company and John Bartholomew Junior (1831 - 1893) took over in 1859. One of their most important works was the engraving of the Imperial Map of England & Wales, published in 1868 in atlas form on 16 sheets . Although originally only sectional maps of England and Wales were prepared from the plates, later they were used to produce county maps. Bartholomew senior printed the 9th and very successful edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Towards the end of the 19th century the company was managed by John George Bartholomew and produced a series of half-inch to the mile travelling maps for Tourists and Cyclists.
