Gilles Robert de Vaugondy and
Didier Robert de Vaugondy.
A family of geographical note, Gilles (1688 - 1766) and Didier (1723 - 86) who seem to be related to the well known cartographer Nicholas Sanson through his grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson.
They inherited much of Sanson's material and combined it with maps and plates acquired from the late Hubert Jalliot to form the basis of Atlas Universal. The original material was revised and corrected with the addition of many new place names. Gilles seems to have been referred to as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert.
Works include:
Atlas Portatif 1748-49.
Pacific Ocean: maps for Histoire des Navigations aux Terres Australes. (Charles de Brosses) 1756
Atlas Universal 1757, 1783 and 1793.
Parte de l'Amerique septentrional (Didier) 1761.
Nouvel Atlas Portatif 1762, 1771- 1813.
