Back to: London
Title: London in the Year 1560
Publication: Maitland's History of London
Date: c. 1754
Description: A retrospective bird's-eye view plan of London in the reign of Elizabeth I, as seen around 1560. Sometimes described as being after CIVITAS LONDONINIUM by Agar, but more likely to be inspired by the unsigned print in the posession of Sloane, which shows the influence of Hogenburg's plan of London and also George Vertue's engraving.
The city's important buildings and sites are depicted and annotated, including The Tower, St. Paul's, London Bridge, the Bull and Bear Baiting Rings, Covent Garden, City Walls and many more. The River Thames is depicted with various sailing ships, barges net fishermen and the original London Bridge. Inscription at the bottom reads, 'Reduced to this Size in the collection Sir Hans Sloan Bar't anno 1738'. Published as the frontpiece to Maitland's HISTORY OF LONDON, from its foundation to the present time.
An 85 point key identifies important places of interest and bears the subtitle 'The Remarkable Places in this Ancient View of LONDON that are not distinguished by Words in the Body thereof; are referred to by Letters and Figures, as hereunder specified'. Decorated by two armorials at the top, the Royal and City crests and a ribbon style title cartouche.
Condition: Folding copy as published, laid on paper, later hand colouring.
